An exploration of the nationalist ideologies of that era, which are Arab nationalism, Greater Syrian nationalism, Pan-Islamic nationalism, gives us the clues of this oscillation but in a limited sense.In order to grasp the full picture, a fourth category is necessary: "liberal nationalism". The insights of Syrian politically relevant elites exemplify and explain the significance of this fourth category.
