EDDL Electronic Device Description Language

The Electronic Device Description is a technology to integrate fielddevices of different vendors into different plants. It is a descriptivetechnology. Hence EDDs are not executable but very portable betweenplatforms and different EDD applications. The technology defines alanguage called EDDL, This language is meanwhile standardised in IEC61804-3. The language is used in order to describe the automationrelated properties and functions of field devices by means of highsophisticated user interfaces. The EDD technology addresses tasks asdiagnostic, asset management or real-time information exchange. Inprinciple, the language EDDL is easy to learn. This book assists thisprocess by introducing existing development tools and a detaileddescription of the manifold features. Furthermore some aspects of thedevelopment of an EDD of a hypothetical device will be shown. Finallythe book summarises the concept of modular devices, introduced in IEC61804-3 and gives an outlook, how EDD will be integrated in the conceptof Field Device Integration architecture.
