Fred Herzog

Fred Herzog wurde vor allem durch seinen ungewöhnlichen Einsatz von Farbe in den 1950er- und 1960er-Jahren bekannt, einer Zeit, in der Kunstfotografie fast ausschließlich mit Schwarz-Weiß-Aufnahmen in Verbindung gebracht wurde. Mehr als 50 Jahre lang arbeitete der kanadische Fotograf nahezu ausschließlich mit Kodachrome-Diafilmen, und erst im vergangenen Jahrzehnt ermöglichte es ihm der technologische Fortschritt, archivalische Pigmentdrucke herzustellen, die den außergewöhnlichen Farben und der Intensität der Kodachrome-Dias entsprechen. In dieser Hinsicht können seine Fotografien als Prototyp für die New-Color-Fotografen der 1970er-Jahre gelten. Diese Monografie vereint mehr als 230 Aufnahmen, von denen ein Großteil nie zuvor reproduziert wurde, und enthält zudem Beiträge gefeierter Autoren wie David Campany und Hans-Michael Koetzle. Fred Herzog is known for his unusual use of colour in the fifties and sixities, a time when art photography was almost exclusively associated with black and white imagery. The Canadian photographer worked almost exclusively with Kodachrome slide film for over 50 years, and only in the past decade has technology allowed him to make archival pigment prints that match the exceptional colour and intensity of the Kodachrome slide. In this respect, his photographs can be seen as a pre-figuration of the New Colour photographers of the 1970s.This book will bring together over 230 images, many never before reproduced, and will feature essays by acclaimed authors David Campany and Hans-Michael Koetzle. Fred Herzog will be the most comprehensive publication on this important photographer to date.
