A gripping story about young camel jockeys in the Middle East Fifteen-year-old Munna leaves his poor family in India to work at a Sheikh's camel farm in a Gulf country. Here, under the supervision of the dreaded Master-ji, he must train the camel jockeys, young boys brought from South Asia to compete in the glamorous Gold Sword Race. Living in cramped conditions and deprived of food these little boys have nowhere to go. Munna realizes that he is trapped, as are the boys. But with encouragement from a Canadian scientist and his spunky teenage daughter, Avra, Munna not only wins the Gold Sword Race, he also stumbles upon a discovery that will end the slavery of the camel kids. He becomes a hero and returns home, his family's future restored.
Shenaaz Nanji's Child of Dandelions, a novel about the expulsion of Uganda's Asians, was shortlisted for the 2008 Governor General's Award for Children's Literature. Her other books include Indian Tales, An Alien in my House!, and Treasures for Lunch. She holds an MFA from Vermont College and lives in Calgary.
