The idea for this book was conceived by Dr. John H. Mc Elroy in 1984, while he was the Assistant Administrator for Environmental Satellite, Data, and Information Services in NOAA, to commemorate the twenty-fifth anniversary of the launching of the first weather satellite. In 1985, with the departure of Dr. McElroy from NOAA, the responsibility for completing the book was taken over by the current Editors:
