Before writing, Cotter founded Cotter Group, the largest auto racing public relations and marketing agency. More recently, he was President of GP America, the group attempting to bring a Formula One Grand Prix to the New York market. He has written for the New York Times, Road & Track and Guitar Aficionado. He resides in Davidson, North Carolina with his wife, Pat, son, Brian, and a growing, eclectic car collection.
