Scottish By Inclination

Langbeschreibung
Malawi is one of the world's poorest countries, where the majority of its 18 million population live on less than GBP323 a year, one million people have HIV/AIDS and more than half of children don't even finish primary school. In The Spirit of Malawi, Susan Dalgety explores contemporary Malawi through the voices of its people, like Homba Mvkeani's granddaughter, Busi, who cared for her at home after a stroke, Wezi Mzumara, who dreams of Malawi becoming the fashion capital of Africa and Alexander Galimoto, wrongfully imprisoned in the country's most notorious prison. Beautifully observed, this book looks behind the well-worn clichés of sub-Saharan Africa and explores how people really live, from the joy ‿ and pain ‿ of childbirth, to old age and death. Ultimately, Malawi's story is a story of hope.
Susan Dalgety has enjoyed a varied career in journalism and politics and has worked in Malawi since 2005 on a range of governance projects. She is a columnist on The Scotsman and, pandemic-permitting, travels widely with her husband, living in Malawi for six months in 2019 after a six-month road trip across the USA and a year-long journey across every country in the European Union. She was Editor of Scotland's leading community newspaper, the Wester Hailes Sentinel, Deputy Leader of Edinburgh City Council, Chief Writer for the Edinburgh Evening News and Chief Press Officer for Jack McConnell during his tenure as First Minister of Scotland. She is a trustee of the McConnell International Foundation, the Scotland Malawi Partnership and 500 miles, a Scottish charity that supports the development and delivery of prosthetic and orthotic services in Malawi and Zambia.
