Mexico in My Heart

New and Selected Poems
Langbeschreibung
Willis Barnstone is a literature in himself: poet, translator, interpreter, in one year he can range from Jesus to Sappho and Borges with calm authority and good humour. He re-translates the New Testament in a version Harold Bloom describes as a superb act of restoration. Mexico in My Heart is the essential Barnstone, drawing on fourteen collections, poetry from six decades of writing and from several continents, together with a significant number of new poems published for the first time.
Born in 1927 in Lewiston, Maine, Willis Barnstone is one of America's most prolific and highly-regarded translators and poets. He has spent extended periods in Mexico, Spain, France, England, Greece, Kenya, and China, both as a teacher and scholar. A Guggenheim fellow and former O'Connor Professor of Greek at Colgate University and Fulbright Professor at Beijing Foreign Studies University, Barnstone is now Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Comparative Literature and Spanish at Indiana University. He is the recipient of numerous awards, including four Pulitzer nominations, the NEA, NEH, ACLS, Auden Award of NY Council on the Arts, and six awards from Poetry Society of America, including the Emily Dickinson Award and the Fred Cody Life Achievement Award. Recent poetic works include Life Watch (BOA), Poeti of Translation (Yale University Press), Ancient Greek Lyri (Indiana University Press), Borges at Eighty (New Directions), Stickball on 88th Street (Red Hen Press), The Restored New Testament (W. W. Norton), The Gnostic Bible (Shambhala), The Other Bible (Harper), and The Secret Reader (University Press of New England).
